Tata Curvv CNG Could Soon Join Tata’s SUV Lineup

Tata Curvv CNG
The Tata Curvv, with its unique coupe-SUV design, has quickly gained attention in the ever-growing midsize SUV segment. While Tata Motors has already introduced the Curvv in India with multiple powertrain options, including EV and petrol engines, the company is now actively considering a CNG variant. This move could further solidify Tata’s position in the competitive SUV market.

Tata Curvv: Expanding Powertrain Options

Tata Motors has left no stone unturned in offering a diverse range of powertrain options for the Tata Curvv. The current lineup includes:
  • Electric Powertrains: The Curvv is available in two electric variants, offering a range between 502km to 585km on a single charge.
  • Petrol Engines: There are two petrol engines available, including a 1.2-litre turbo and a new direct injection 1.2-litre turbo.
  • Diesel Engine: The Curvv also offers a diesel variant for those who prefer traditional fuel options.
However, what truly sets the Curvv apart is Tata’s consideration of a CNG variant, which could cater to a more budget-conscious segment of the market.

The Potential Tata Curvv CNG

The CNG version of the Tata Curvv is under active consideration, as confirmed by Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility. According to Chandra, the design of the Curvv has been intentionally protected to accommodate a CNG powertrain. Although it is still premature to confirm a launch date, this consideration aligns with Tata’s broader strategy to offer CNG in higher-segment models.
The CNG option for the Curvv is expected to be paired with the 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine. This engine has already been showcased in the Tata Nexon, which is slated to receive a CNG variant by early 2025. The decision to equip the Curvv with this engine is in line with Tata’s ongoing efforts to drive the ‘premiumisation of CNG,’ offering more upscale features in CNG-powered vehicles.

Tata Motors’ CNG Market Strategy

Tata Motors is currently the second-largest seller of CNG-powered cars and SUVs in India, a significant achievement in a competitive market dominated by Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. In CY2023, Tata sold 63,993 CNG cars and SUVs, and by the first half of CY2024, they had already retailed 54,545 units, marking a 222% increase from H1 2023.
Tata Motors entered the CNG market with the Tiago hatchback and Tigor sedan in January 2022. Since then, they have expanded their CNG portfolio with models like the Tata Punch CNG and the upcoming Nexon CNG. The addition of the Curvv CNG could further enhance Tata’s standing in the CNG market, offering customers more options in the midsize SUV segment.
What are the powertrain options available for the Tata Curvv?

The Tata Curvv is available with electric powertrains, two petrol engines (including a 1.2-litre turbo and a direct injection 1.2-litre turbo), and a diesel engine. A CNG variant is also under consideration.

When can we expect the Tata Curvv CNG to be launched?

While there is no confirmed launch date yet, the Tata Curvv CNG is under active consideration by Tata Motors.

How does the Tata Curvv CNG compare with other CNG SUVs in the market?

The Tata Curvv CNG is expected to compete with other CNG-powered midsize SUVs like the Maruti Grand Vitara and the Toyota Hyryder. Tata’s focus on premium features in its CNG vehicles could make the Curvv a strong contender in this segment.
